WILLIAMSBURG, Virginia – Ryan LaGrange homered twice and knocked in a career-high five runs to back the 12-strikeout performance from UNCW starter Mat Batts as the Seahawks knocked off William & Mary, 8-2, in a Colonial Athletic Association series opener on Friday at Plumeri Park.
The Seahawks evened their record at 14-14 on the season while improving to 2-1 in the league. The Tribe, meanwhile, dipped to 18-10 with their third straight loss and 2-1 in the CAA.
Batts (1-2) broke his previous career-best of 11 strikeouts, done on three occasions. Over eight innings, Batts held the nation's top offensive team to a run on four hits, two walks and two hit batters. W&M didn't have a hit till the fifth inning.
W&M lefthander Jason Inghram (5-1) suffered his first loss of the season after allowing six runs, five earned, on six hits and five walks. He also surrendered three homers on the evening.
LaGrange homered twice in the same game for the first time in his career. Also adding a homer on the night was Corey Dick, who launched his fourth round tripper of the season in the sixth inning as he and LaGrange went back-to-back. Terence Connelly added two hits.
Josh Smith had two hits for the Tribe and was joined by Ryan Lindemuth with RBI singles.
How it happened: The Seahawks opened the scoring in the third on a bases-loaded double play ball hit by LaGrange. Drew Farber opened the inning with a walk and moved to second on a fielding error by the rightfielder on a ball hit by Casey Golden. Connelly drew the second walk of the inning to load the bases for LaGrange who rolled into a 6-4-3 double play.
Inside the box score: Batts allowed the leadoff hitter to reach just once in eight innings as the Tribe was 2-for-9 on the night … Batts also bared down with two outs, not allow a hit in eight situations … W&M was 0-for-9 with two outs and 2-for-14 with runners on … UNCW was 3for-13 in RBI situations and plated four runs with two out.
Notes: It was Batts' first win of the season … The last Seahawk to strikeout 12 in a game was Daniel Cropper in 2011 against Jacksonville … Three home runs were a season-high for UNCW … LaGrange and Tyler Molinaro also went back-to-back at Hofstra in 2013 … LaGrange also extended his on base streak to 20 games … LaGrange's homers came in the sixth and seventh innings.
