Fewer deaths, more violations after changes to NC driving laws

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - The numbers of teen driving deaths and injuries have fallen since the General Assembly required more of young drivers and their parents before children can drive on their own. But moving and seat belt violations have gone up.

The Division of Motor Vehicles has completed a study demanded by legislators in a 2011 law that required drivers with learner's permits to keep a driving log and record 60 hours or driving time with an adult before moving to a provisional license. Then, drivers need an additional 12 hours before getting another license they can use until age 18.

The study says teen fatalities fell from 183 in 2010 to 114 in 2013.

DMV suggests more emphasis on traffic violations, crashes and penalties are needed with written and road driving tests.
