Power, phone service disrupted in Madison, IN after squirrel's 'suicide,' EMA director says

JEFFERSON COUNTY, IN (WAVE) - Phone service and electricity were knocked out across a large section of downtown Madison, Indiana Friday after a squirrel "committed suicide" on a power line, according to the director of Jefferson County's Emergency Management Agency.

Dave Bell said the squirrel's electrocution caused the disruption in services, including the interruption of traffic signals in the eastern section of downtown Madison.

In addition, 911 calls stopped ringing into central dispatch; however, they were being rerouted to King's Daughters' Hospital.

Service was restored within a few hours.
