WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – Inrecent days officers with the Wilmington Police Department have picketed for moremoney, better benefits, and shorter shifts.
A survey released to WECTThursday revealed that many officers are worried about being on the job for 12hours at a time; some of them commenting that theexhaustion they experience could lead to dangerous situations.
"Current shift, in my opinion, isresponsible for injuries and accidents," one survey taker said. Another added, "We are lucky wehave not been sued yet if an officer is injured due to fatigue...or makes a baddecision due to being tired."
Nearly half of the 150 employees that answered the questionnaire said they would prefer a 10.5 hour shift.
We reached out to the WilmingtonPolice Department for comment on the comments in the survey. They said they didnot want to respond at this time.
