Wilmington, NC – Wilmington Hammerheads FC announced today the addition of defender Ashani Fairclough and midfielder Michael Calderon as they approach their first match of the 2014 USL PRO regular season this Saturday. Both players will be making their USL PRO debut with the Hammerheads in the upcoming season.
Ashani Fairclough comes to the Hammerheads after being on trial with the New York Cosmos. The Jamaican defender spent time with Major League Soccer's Seattle Sounders in 2013, making appearances in Reserve League action.
"This is a great opportunity to be with the Hammerheads organization," said Fairclough. "It is an exciting challenge ahead and I am looking forward to a productive year."
Fairclough was a member of the 2009 Jamaican U-20 National Team. He served as captain of the 2007-08 Jamaican U-17 team and competed in CONCACAF U-17 World Cup Qualifying in 2008. The Jamaican youth international played four seasons at University of South Florida, including all 21 games in his freshman year while being named one of College Soccer News' "100 Freshmen to Watch."
Joining the midfield this season, Michael Calderon was a recent 2014 MLS SuperDraft fourth-round pick for Vancouver Whitecaps FC in January.
The midfielder recently concluded his collegiate career with the University of New Mexico in 2013. The Costa Rican appeared on College Soccer News and TopDrawerSoccer's National Team of the Week on six separate occasions during his time with New Mexico. He was also an All-NCAA Tournament Team and First Team All-Conference USA selection.
"I am happy for the opportunity," said Calderon. "I am looking forward to starting the season, winning games and getting to the Championship is our goal."
Calderon was also a member of Costa Rica's U-17 and U-20 National Teams.
Wilmington Hammerheads FC will kick off their regular season on Saturday, April 5 at Legion Stadium versus the Harrisburg City Islanders. Before Saturday's matchup, the Hammerheads have invited fans to attend a rally today from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. being held in their newly appointed Fan Zone space at Independence Mall. This will take place every Wednesday before a home match and all fans are encouraged to attend.
