WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – It took only 17 days for UNCW Athletic Director Jimmy Bass to hire Kevin Keatts as the Seahawks new head basketball coach. Keatts hopes to quickly rebuild the program back to its winning ways.

UNCW hasn't been to the NCAA tournament since 2006, but prior to that had made the Big Dance four-times in seven years from 1998-2006. "I will work as hard as I can to get this program back to where is deserves to be" said Keatts

For Keatts, who spent the past three seasons as an assistant under Hall-of-fame coach Rich Pitino at Louisville it starts with defense. "On the defensive end you have to play for me. The only times you are coming out of a game is not for a bad shot, but for a defensive break down and you are not giving it your all."

Craig Ponder, who is a rising junior guard for the Seahawks played for Keatts at Hargrave Military Academy and has been selling Keatts up tempo style to his teammate.  "We played hard on the defensive end and we took whatever shots we wanted to" said Ponder.

Keatts plans to attend the Final Four in Dallas, Texas before hitting the recruiting trail.
