WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - A new drug is causing concerns among individuals in the Port City.
According to Kenny House, Clinical Director at the Coastal Horizons Center, the drug Zohydro is a very strong pain killer that is about to be available to patients suffering pain. House said the drug may be five times stronger than Oxycontin or Vicodin.
The Coastal Horizons Center provides treatment to people suffering from a variety of disorders including substance abuse and addiction. House works to prevent this kind of activity.
Zohydro has already been approved by the FDA and is used to treat long-term, chronic pain, according to House. He said his organization is worried about potential substance abuse that may come with this new and powerful drug.
"It's all the collateral damage that we would be concerned about that may happen once this is made available, more routinely prescribed, and those kinds of things when we might see it more in the community," House explained.
House said the drug is one of several opioids that people can become addicted to. He fears for the safety of those who use it or abuse it.
"Here's just another drug that can cause a host of problems and it's very powerful and very potent, which means we really have to safeguard it," House said.
