NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – The New Hanover County School Board has decided to make one school a year-round school, extended the leasing agreement for another, and hire a new principal for a high school.

Sunset Park Elementary

The School Board voted to change Sunset Park Elementary to a year-round school. The change will go into effect at the start of the 2015-2016 school year.

School officials have documented a summer slide among a significant number of students, who show regression after returning from a longer summer break.

Wrightsville Beach School

The Board also extended its lease agreement with Wrightsville Beach Baptist Church. The school system started sending students to the Church to help alleviate overcrowding at Wrightsville Beach Elementary School.

The vote Tuesday night extends the lease through June 2015 with an option for another year. The school system pays nearly $2,300 a month to the church for that agreement.

New Hanover High School

The Board also voted to appoint James McAdams as the full-time principal at New Hanover High School. He signed on as interim principal in December after Todd Finn resigned.
