State closes popular Whiteville restaurant for delinquent taxes

WHITEVILLE, NC (WECT) – A popular restaurant in Columbus County is closed due to unpaid taxes.
Mamma Rita's, an Italian restaurant in Whiteville, owes the North Carolina Department of Revenue nearly $16,000 in withholding and sales & use taxes, according to a certificate of tax liability filed March 13 at the Columbus County Clerk of Court's Office.
The amount owed includes the original taxes, as well as fees and interest.
A Department of Revenue spokesman said officials changed the locks on the restaurant and seized equipment and other property on site.
