NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – A Wilmington veterinarian is warning against the dangers of lyme disease.
Dr. Timothy Ford, a veterinarian at Needham Animal Hospital, said lyme disease is not extremely common in the Cape Fear region, but it still poses a threat. Ford said the warmer months bring an increased presence of ticks that carry the disease.
"We don't have a lot of lyme disease in this area, but it is out here," Ford said. "The tick will take a blood meal from a host and it will transmit to another animal and you know we worry about our dogs."
Ford said it's important to check pets for ticks after outdoor activities, and to make sure they're up to date on all vaccines.
