PENDER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – The Town of Burgaw is working to set up a "Code Red" system to notify people about public utility work.

Burgaw's system will be the same that Pender County uses and will send automated messages for things like boil water advisories. In the past, crews had to go door-to-door to alert customers.

If someone chooses to opt in to "Code Red," they will get all the information to their cell phone-- whether it be through email, text message or phone call.

A test call took place Friday, if you are signed up for the alerts and did not receive the call please contact town hall.

Director of Emergency Management, Tom Collins said out of the estimated 55,000 people living in Pender, only 15,000 of them have land lines any more.

To opt in, just go to the Pender County Emergency Management website www.penderem.com.

Click on the icon on the left hand side of the page that says "Code Red" and just follow instructions. You will begin to get alerts immediately.
