LELAND, NC (WECT) - It's been almost a year since a soldier returning to Wilmington from Afghanistan was surprised by his wife who lost 150 pounds during his one year deployment.

Misty Shaffer revealed her new look to her husband Larry moments after he walked to baggage claim at Wilmington International Airport.

Following WECT's live report on the big surprise, the couple from Leland was overwhelmed with calls from news organizations, like CNN, calling for an interview. Media outlets from across the country wanted to tell her story.

"That Sunday it was like our phone started blowing up," said Misty. "It was like there's so and so and so and so all wanting to do an interview. I was like oh my God, what is going on."

A lot has changed for the couple, but one thing has stayed the same over the year. Misty, who once weighed in excess of 300 pounds, has kept her weight off.

"I still watch what I eat and how much I eat," Misty said.

It was her weight loss without surgery or diet pills that landed the couple on the cover of Woman's World, a national magazine with an emphasis on women's health.

"It was awesome," Misty said. "There were a bunch of first for me; first trip to New York, first trip on an airplane."

Both Misty and Larry try to stick with a diet high in protein and low in sugar. They eat mainly chicken and vegetables, and they're passing the good eating habits on to their young daughter who snacked on carrots during the time of this interview.

The attention has put Larry in a different light. The army specialist says someone is always making remarks about the newfound notoriety.

"Like when I go to drills they say there goes Mr. Hollywood," Larry joked. "It's insane."

The couple said they know the fame will fade, but that it's an experience very few people will know in a lifetime.

"Especially not in little old Leland," Larry said with a smile.
