Local veterans to be recognized during welcome home celebration

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - Local veterans returning fromservice overseas will be recognized during a welcome home celebration Thursday.

According to a news release from Cape Fear Community College,the guests of honor are US Marine David Nilson and his service dog, Sunny.Nilson served in the Marine Corps in Afghanistan as a dog handler and wasassigned to locate improvised explosive devices (IEDs) with Sonny. The pair hasrecently retired and is now reunited back in Wilmington.

The ceremony will begin with a motorcycle escort that startsat the North Campus at 1 p.m. Another ceremony will be held from 2 p.m. to 3p.m. in Tabitha's Courtyard on Wilmington Campus to honor Nilson, Sonny and allthe returning veterans.

In addition, Thursday is the last day of the book drivebeing held to benefit hospitalized war veterans. Books will be collected in thecourtyard.

The book drive and ceremony are both open to the public.
