Deputies arrest man on the run

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – Deputies with the New Hanover County Sheriff's Office arrested a man in Wilmington Tuesday night who had been on the run for the past seven months.

Javon Ward was wanted in Havelock in connection to a shooting that happened in August 2013.

Ward is accused of shooting Steven Todd five times from a moving vehicle at the Kelley Park Apartments in Havelock.

Havelock Police said Todd had been in a previous dispute with Ward before the shooting happened.

Ward was arrested at a Wilmington hotel Tuesday night after police received a tip regarding drug activity. Ward was charged with the following:

  • Assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill
  • Trafficking opium or heroin (x2)
  • Possession with intent to manufacture sell or distribute heroin
  • Possession of drug paraphernalia
  • Fail to appear on misdemeanor (x2)
  • Resist/delay/obstruct public officers
