Senate candidate talks castration, wants to make Congress 'squeal'

(RNN) - A U.S. Senate candidate in Iowa is touting her ability to cut spending based on her experience removing hog testicles.

"I'm Joni Ernst. I grew up castrating hogs on an Iowa farm. So when I get to Washington, I'll know how to cut pork," she says in her latest campaign video.

Ernst, a self-described "mother, soldier, conservative" and former state senator, separated herself from a crowded pack of Republican candidates with the 30-second ad, entitled Squeal.

Costarring several piglets who may one day be meeting her and a sharp instrument of her choice, she credits her parents for teaching her to live within her means. It is a lesson she means to pass on to Washington, DC.

If they don't learn, she's got another plan in mind for the "big spenders."

"Let's make them squeal," she says with a smile.

A March 13 Quinnipiac Poll predicted the Democratic candidate, U.S. Rep. Bruce Braley, to have a sizable lead over any of the Republican contenders. Braley led Ernst 42 to 29 when the two were placed head-to-head.

The winner will replace Sen. Tom Harkin, D-IA, who is retiring.

She was not the only one having a noteworthy day in campaign ads. In Kentucky, U.S. Sen. Mitch McConnell's team pulled a video because a montage of the Kentucky Wildcats basketball team contained images from the Duke 2010 national championship squad.
