News release from UNCW
WILMINGTON, North Carolina – As the weather has warmed up, so has been UNCW senior lefthander Mat Batts. He was named Colonial Athletic Association Co-Pitcher-of-the-Week on Monday following a strong start against West Virginia in the series opener last Friday at Brooks Field.
Batts becomes the second Seahawk pitcher to earn the honor, joining Nick Monroe who was the circuit's Pitcher-of-the-Week earlier this season after flirting with perfection against Liberty and finishing with a one-hitter.
Against West Virginia, Batts went toe-to-toe with the reigning Big 12 Pitcher-of-the-Year, Harrison Musgrave, in a game in which neither starter would figure in the decision. Batts limited the Mountaineers to a run on four hits and a pair of walks over a season-high eight innings. He continued his climb on UNCW's strike out list with five to raise his career total to 245. Batts sits in sixth on the all-time list. His two walks were also a season-high and increased his walk total to a meager five on the season.
The Seahawks would go on to win the opener, 2-1, in 10 innings, marking their third straight series opening victory, each started by Batts. UNCW won the series on Sunday with a 13-10 win over WVU.
For Batts, it was the fifth time he's been honored by the conference with the Pitcher-of-the-Week honor and the first time this season.
UNCW visits East Carolina on Tuesday and host NC State on Wednesday in a pair of key non-conference tilts. Both games are set for 6 p.m. starts. Batts is slated to make his next start this Friday when the Seahawks visit James Madison in the CAA opener for both teams. First-pitch for that game is 6:30 p.m.
