WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Corey Dick drove in five runs, tying his career-high, and had three hits, including his third home run of the season, as UNCW rallied past West Virginia, 13-10, to win the weekend series on Sunday at Brooks Field.
The Seahawks evened their record at 11-11 while the Mountaineers dropped to 12-8. UNCW improved to 3-1 against the Big 12 this season.
UNCW's Ryan LaGrange added three hits and scored three runs while Luke Dunlap had two hits and three runs batted in. They combined with Dick to go 8-for-11 with six runs scored and 10 driven in.
UNCW reliever Will Shepley (1-0) earned the win allowing just two hits and a walk over a career-long three innings. Kelly Secrest nailed down his first save of the season.
Billy Fleming paced WVU with four hits while Jacob Rice and Shaun Wood each had two hits and drove in three and four runs, respectively. Wood delivered a homer in the fifth and Rice gave WVU the lead with a two-run single in the sixth.
Corey Walter (0-3) took the loss, allowing two runs on five hits over 4.2 innings.
How it happened: WVU rallied from a 9-3 deficit to take a 10-9 lead into the bottom of the sixth, but Dick drilled his third round tripper of the season with LaGrange on base to give UNCW an 11-10 lead. The Seahawks would add two more runs in the seventh on a RBI double by LaGrange and a run-scoring single from Dick, one batter later.
Inside the box score: Both teams had five hits with two outs, but UNCW plated six runs to WVU's three in those situations … Both teams had success landing its leadoff hitter on base with WVU doing it six times and the Seahawks five … UNCW advanced runners in 17-of-28 opportunities … UNCW turned two more double plays bringing its season total to 25.
Notes: The Seahawks earned their first series win since the second weekend of the season when they went 2-0 against Ohio and 1-1 against Liberty … UNCW set season-highs with 13 runs scored and 16 hits … Shepley lowered his ERA to 1.88 … Secrest is now fourth all-time at UNCW with 10 career saves … Josh Abshire had a career-high three hits and gunned down to potential base stealers, he's now thrown out 5-of-9 on the season … The round tripper in the sixth was the 20th of Dick's career … After opening the season 0-for-11 and suffering an ankle injury, Dunlap is hitting .410 (16-for-39) over his last 12 games to raise his season average to .320.
