WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Bobby Boyd and Billy Fleming combined for six hits and four runs batted in to back Sean Carly's six strong innings as West Virginia topped UNCW, 9-3, to even the series on Saturday at Brooks Field.
The Mountaineers upped their record to 12-7 with the win while the Seahawks dipped under .500 at 10-11. Game three of the series will now be played at 11 a.m. on Sunday, due to expected rain in the afternoon.
Carley (4-0) allowed three runs, two earned, on nine hits, he walked three and struck out three. Ryan Tezak earned his first save with three innings of no-hit baseball.
UNCW's Jordan Ramsey (0-2) was saddled with the loss, allowing eight runs, seven earned, on three hits. He struggled with his command, hitting three batters and walking two in 1.1 innings.
Both Boyd and Fleming finished 3-for-5 at the plate with Fleming adding a double. Jacob Rice added two hits for WVU.
Robbie Thorburn and Luke Dunlap had two hits apiece for the Seahawks.
How it happened: WVU struck for six runs in the second to break open a 2-0 game. Ramsey opened the frame hitting three of the first four batters he faced, sandwiched around a strikeout. Taylor Munden drew a bases-loaded walk for the first run and Boyd followed with a two-run single. Fleming would be the last batter Ramsey faced as he doubled in a run.
Inside the box score: WVU plated 6-of-8 runners from third with less than two outs … Both teams combined to get its leadoff hitter on base in 9-of-18 innings … UNCW pitchers did not yield a two-out hit in the game … UNCW's bullpen combined to limit WVU to a run over the final 7.2 innings.
