Diamond Hawks take down West Virginia 2-1

UNCW Press Release

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Casey Golden's two-out infield single in the bottom of the 10th lifted UNCW past visiting West Virginia, 2-1, in the series opener on Friday at Brooks Field.

The Seahawks evened their record at 10-10 on the season with their first extra inning win of the season. The Mountaineers fell to 11-7 with the road loss and stand at 8-5 in away games.

Kelly Secrest (5-1) earned his team-leading fifth win of the season for UNCW, throwing a pair of shutout innings. Starter Mat Batts tossed eight innings of one-run baseball while allowing four hits, a walk and striking out five.

Reliever Pascal Paul (0-1) took the loss, allowing the winning run on three hits in two-thirds of an inning. WVU starter Harrison Musgrave also gave his staff a strong start, going nine innings, allowing one run while striking out seven.

Ryan LaGrange and Luke Dunlap each had two hits for the Seahawks while Billy Fleming added two for WVU.

How it happened: In the 10th, Drew Farber open the frame with a single and Dillon Bass advanced pinch runner Andy Austin to second with a sac bunt. WVU intentionally walked Terence Connelly and Josh Abshire followed with a single to right. Austin, however, was thrown out at the plate on a strong throw from rightfielder Michael Constantini. With runners on second and third, Golden chopped a ball in front of the plate that bounced high and Paul was unable to make a play on the ball as Connelly came across with the winning run.

Inside the box score: WVU was just 1-for-8 in RBI opportunities while the Seahawks finished 3-for-7 … After landing all nine leadoff hitters on base safely against Coastal Carolina earlier in the week, UNCW was just 2-for-10, as was WVU … Batts and Secrest held WVU to one hit in 11 at bats with two out … Both teams combined for 25 fly ball outs.

Notes: It was UNCW's first extra-inning game of the season … The Seahawks are now 2-0 against the Big 12 this season … For Secrest, it was his 15th career win … Batts dropped his ERA below 4.00 (3.89) … Corey Dick extended his career-long hitting streak to 16 games with a first inning single … UNCW strung together three two-out hits in the first inning to take a 1-0 lead … WVU's only run came in the eighth on a two-out single by Taylor Munden … Musgrave is the reigning Big 12 Pitcher-of-the-Year … The Seahawks now lead the all-time series, 12-4.

Next: The series continues on Saturday with a 2 p.m. start. Jordan Ramsey (0-1) gets the start for UNCW while WVU counters with Sean Carley (3-0).
