BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -

Former Alabama Crimson Tide quarterback Greg McElroy announced his retirement from the NFL via Twitter on Friday morning.

McElroy had a short career in the pros, playing only three seasons with one career start during his tenure.

He did have one memorable game with the New York Jets helping them mount a fourth quarter comeback drive to beat the Cardinals 7-6 in the 2012 season.

Most folks in the state of Alabama remember McElroy for his time as the starting quarterback in Tuscaloosa. He started for the Tide for two years, going 24-3 and leading Alabama to a 14-0 season and a national championship for 2009. McElroy was the SEC Championship Game MVP in 2009 when Alabama defeated Florida 32-13.
