WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – A joint task force consisting of several agencies is investigating the cause of a large fire that sparked at Dorothy's Originals on Market Street Thursday afternoon.

According to the Wilmington Fire Department, the fire started in the storage room near the back of the building that was used to manufacture pottery for the business.

The owners of Dorothy's Originals were inside the building when it caught fire. They said they smelled smoke and got out.

"This is just one of those things that happened in life," Dorothy Noe said. "You just have to close that chapter and we go to another chapter."

Officials said damage estimates are roughly $500,000 to the structure and contents of the business, with the back portion of the building is a total loss.

Fire crews and investigators remained on scene into the late night hours to monitor hot spots and look at what may have caused the fire.

The fire also caused smoke damage to Plum Fancy. It makes up the front part of the building.

"I just have a lot of time and energy into this building, and it's sad that I have to start again, to fix it all up again. It just irritates me; there's no sense in it," Shannon Stuart with Plum Fancy said.
