WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - Utility crews fixed a gas leak that happened Wednesday morning at the intersection of 17th and Grace Streets.

The Wilmington Police Department and utility crews responded to the leak around 9:30 a.m.

According to David Hines of the Wilmington Fire Department, Cape Fear Public Utility Authority crews were conducting sewer system repairs when they accidentally ruptured a natural gas line.

Piedmont Gas crews arrived at the scene and fixed the leaking gas line.

Residents within a one block radius of 17th and Grace Streets were evacuated and authorities diverted traffic around the scene.

Residents are now free to return to their homes and traffic should return to normal in the area.
