EVANSVILLE, IN (WFIE) -

While authorities continue to investigate the two-story apartment building fire that happened on West Franklin Street Monday, the families of the victims say they're just trying to find a way to heal.

It's been an extremely emotional day for the family of the victims. 14 News spoke with Keri Jones' sister, Candice Owen. She says she's just trying to understand how and why something like this happened.

"I think that the tragedy that we've gone through would make any family stronger," Candice says.

Candice says her family is no stranger to tough times. About a year ago, her mom was murdered.

"Our wounds are still so fresh from my mom," she says.

Now, they're dealing with the loss of three of their loved ones, who passed away in the deadly fire on Monday afternoon. Candice's sister, Keri Jones, her niece, Jazmine Jones, and uncle, Donald Gene Lankford were the victim's of the fire.

"She was so innocent and she had such a beautiful life to look forward to," Candice says.

It leaves the family looking for answers, wondering how the accused killer, 31-year-old Christopher Compton could do something like this.

"How could you? Nobody deserves to go through what you put them through," Candice says.

She says her family is trying to stay strong and they're doing what they can to help Keri's daughter, Sierra, Jazmine's twin sister.

"We are there, we are all there for each other," Candice says. "They were inseparable. They did everything together.

Sierra survived and so did Candice's fiance and her cousin who were both injured in the fire. But Candice says, while that is a relief, their focus is now on Compton.

"I know he'll get justice. I know he will. In this life and the next," Candice shares.

Candice says an account has been set up to help the family at Heritage Federal Credit Union on First Avenue. It's called the Jazmine Jones Memorial Fund.
