WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) –  The Wilmington Police Department has beefed up security around New Hanover High School after the recent violent activity in that area.

In just two days last week, there was a shooting and a stabbing on 12th and Chestnut Streets, which are just blocks away from New Hanover High School. Both incidents were gang-related and both happened in broad daylight.

Wilmington Police Chief Ralph Evangelous said that they have extra officers in the area around the school. He said that some of them are even working overtime and that his on-duty personnel are focusing on that area.

Evangelous said that things have calmed down because some of the suspects connected to the shooting and stabbing are in custody.

"We think things have calmed down," Evangelous said. "We've got presence and we're going to continue to have presence for the rest of the year, and next school year."

The New Hanover Sheriff's Office said they have not made any major changes, but have had more officers at school functions.

The increase was started because of an incident in February when a suspected gang member had a gun and heroin at a basketball game.
