UPDATE: Autopsy for body found on BHI unable to yield positive ID

BALD HEAD ISLAND, NC (WECT) - The autopsy for a body found on Bald Head Island has determined that it is a black male but couldn't be positively identified, according to Southport Police Chief Jerry Dove.

The cause of death is still undetermined, but the autopsy revealed no bullet wounds or traumatic injuries.

The body was found Monday around 7 a.m. at the number seven beach access near the marina on Bald Head Island.

Investigators still believe there is a possibility that the body is that of Adam Muhammad.

Muhammad, 22, was last seen leaving work at the Yacht Basin Eatery in Southport Friday, February 14.

The determination made by the medical examiner was that the findings of the autopsy are consistent with the amount of time that Muhammad has been missing.

In order to positively ID the body, examiners are comparing teeth from the body with dental records from a local orthodontist who worked on Muhammad in 2005.

Adam's mother, Aleyah Muhammad said over the phone that she was weary of this news all along.

"I've been praying for the best and hoping Adam would come home but I'm prepared for the worst," said Muhammad. "At least if it does turn out to be him, I'll have closure."

Southport Police and the Brunswick County Sheriff's Office are investigating.
