UPPER MARLBORO, Maryland – UNCW junior guard Kelva Atkins has been named to the All-Tournament Team at the 2014 Colonial Athletic Association Women's Basketball Championship, tournament officials announced Sunday.
A Second-Team All-CAA selection, Atkins averaged 27.0 points, 7.5 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 2.0 steals in leading UNCW to a 1-1 record in the championship held at Show Place Arena. She shot 42.2 percent from the field and 92.3 percent from the free-throw line in those contests and committed just four turnovers in 78 minutes played.
The Stem, N.C., product opened the championship with her second double-double of the season; scoring 21 points and adding 10 rebounds in leading UNCW to a 67-65 victory over William & Mary in the first round. Atkins also recorded five assists and three steals against the Tribe.
She followed that performance with a career-high 33 points in a 69-56 setback to eventual tournament champion James Madison in the quarterfinals. Atkins was 11-of-19 from the field and 9-of-10 at the free-throw line against the Dukes.
The award marks the second consecutive season that Atkins has been named to the All-Tournament Team at the CAA Championship. She was recognized after the 2013 championship as she averaged 18.5 points, 4.5 rebounds and 3.5 assists in two games during the event.
