UNCW Press Release

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Buoyed by a pair late inning offensive outbursts, Indiana State swept host UNCW on Saturday to win the non-conference series at Brooks Field.

The Sycamores, who had their 12-game winning streak halted on Friday, improved to 14-2 overall and 8-1 on the road. The Seahawks, meanwhile, dipped to 8-10 with the losses.

In the nightcap, ISU starter Kurt Kudrecki (3-1) kept the Seahawks at bay, pitching out of trouble several times during his 6.1 innings. He allowed one run on seven hits and two walks while striking out six. Trent Lunsford earned his second save of the season with 2.1 innings of one-hit, shutout baseball.

Nick Monroe (1-1) took the loss for UNCW despite a solid start. Monroe allowed two runs on five hits and three walks in eight innings.

ISU broke the game open in the top of the ninth with four runs on three hits and a pair of walks.

Jacob Hayes and Taylor Steen each had two hits for the Sycamores while leadoff hitter Landon Curry scored twice.

Teddy Cillis had two hits for UNCW, which stranded 11 runners on base.

How it happened: Game 1 – Leading 5-4 after scoring in the bottom of the seventh, UNCW surrendered seven runs over the final two innings to lose, 11-5. ISU plated five runs on five hits in the top of the eighth against losing pitcher Christian MacDonald (0-2). Curry drove in three with a bases-loaded double to highlight the frame for the Sycamores.

Game 2 – Leading 2-1 in the top of the ninth, ISU again added to its lead with four runs in the top of the frame against UNCW reliever William Prince. Cody Zimmerman, Connor McClain and Steen all had RBI singles as ISU pushed the game out of reach.

Inside the box score: Game 1 – Both teams combined for six double plays, each with three … ISU was 0-6 with two out while UNCW went 2-for-9 … ISU did, however, score 5-of-7 runners from third with less than two out … The Sycamores landed their leadoff hitter on base in 4-of-9 innings … UNCW starter Ryan Foster held ISU lefties to 2-for-9 hitting, but righties were 7-for-10.

Game 2 – UNCW went 0-for-11 in RBI opportunities and just 3-for-15 with runners on base … Monroe did not yield a two-out hit (0-7) and allowed just one hit with runners on base (1-10) … ISU stole five bases in game two, including three in the ninth inning.

Notes: Corey Dick had hits in each game and now owns a 14-game hitting streak … LaGrange has reached base safely in 10 consecutive games … UNCW is now even with Indiana State at 2-all in the all-time series … The combined six double plays in the opener was one short of the UNCW combined record of seven, done on four occasions … UNCW added two in the nightcap.

Up next: The Seahawks visit Coastal Carolina on Mar. 18 for a 6 p.m. start.
