WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Josh Abshire's one-out single plated the winning run in the bottom of the ninth as UNCW ended Indiana State's 12-game winning streak with a 3-2 win on Friday at Brooks Field.
The Seahawks, who ended VCU's seven-game winning streak last weekend, improved to 8-8 on the season while the Sycamores fell to 12-2.
Kelly Secrest (4-1) earned the win with 2.2 innings of shutout baseball. He lowered his earned run average to 0.73. Starter Mat Batts didn't figure in the decision despite another strong start with eight strikeouts in 6.1 innings. He allowed two runs on five hits, a walk and a hit batter.
Reliever Josh Dove (1-1) was tagged with the loss after allowing the unearned run for UNCW to win it. Starter David Stagg allowed two runs, on five hits and a walk over seven strong innings.
Ryan LaGrange homered and doubled to lead the UNCW lineup. His first homer of the season coming in the fourth inning tied the game at 1-all and his double in the sixth game the Seahawks a 2-1 lead.
Tyler Wampler collected two hits for the Sycamores, who suffered their first loss since the season opener at Auburn, 4-0.
How it happened: With one out, Corey Dick extended his hitting streak to a career-long 12 games with an infield hit. Pinch runner Steven Linkous stole second and advanced to third as the throw bounced short and into the outfield. ISU walked Andy Austin and had two strikes on Abshire before he lined a single up the middle to plate Linkous.
Inside the box score: In a pitching dominated opener both teams went 2-for-8 with runners on base … The two teams combined to go 4-for-21 with two out … UNCW had the game's lone 2-out RBI (LaGrange in the sixth) … Batts held ISU to 1-for-7 hitting with two out and allowed just one leadoff hitter on base safely.
