WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – Wilmington Fire crews responded to a gas leak in the 400 block of Orange Street Friday evening.

Several streets in downtown Wilmington were closed due to the leak. New Hanover County Dispatchers said crews had Orange and Dock Streets closed to traffic around 3rd and 5th Streets.

Battalion Chief Sammy Flowers said the leak started when a resident, digging a hole in their backyard to bury a family pet, struck the gas line. Flowers said because of wind conditions and atmospheric monitoring readings several homes needed to be evacuated for safety.

There were no injuries to civilians or emergency personnel.
