WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – Local potters have crafted over 1,500 bowls for the Wilmington Empty Bowls fundraiser, which raises money to fight hunger in the area.
The event will be at the First Baptist Church Activity Center on Independence Boulevard from 11:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Friday, March 14. Tickets can be purchased at the door for $20.
The money raised from Empty Bowls 2014 will support Mother Hubbard's Cupboard, which supplies emergency food to those in need, and The Good Shepherd Center, which prepares meals for the hungry and shelters the area's homeless.
Ceramic artist Vicky Smith said that dozens of potters from the Coastal Carolina Clay Guild, Fat Cat Pottery and Orange Street Pottery participated in the crafting of the bowls.
Students from area high schools, Cape Fear Community College, and the University of North Carolina Wilmington also pitched in.
Guests can take home a bowl after dining on a meal of savory soups and breads prepared by local restaurateurs.
Any leftover bowls will go to other organizations raising money for the same cause.
