CAROLINA BEACH, NC (WECT) – The Carolina Beach Police Department is increasing their police presence on the north end of the island on Freeman Park.
The Carolina Beach Police Department is adding a mobile command center to Freeman Park, which will be a sub-station of the police station. Officers will have all of their tools for policing the beach inside of the unit.
"We were seeing some reckless operations. People driving without due care in the sand in their four wheel drive vehicles. We were seeing some alcohol consumption issues," said Carolina Beach Police Chief Ken Hinkle.
They have also launched a Community Impact Unit consisting of five officers. The CIU will patrol area hotspots starting with Freeman Park.
"We want you to be able to have an enjoyable time at Freeman Park, but we want you to also understand to have some accountability and be responsible," Hinkle said.
In the 2013 tourist season, CBPD only had one officer patrolling Freeman Park. Civil citations totaled 373. The CBPD will begin their increased police presence starting in April.
