UNCW swimming head coach Dave Allen calling it a career

Posted: Updated:

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – After 37 seasons UNCW's first and only swimming head coach Dave Allen is retiring.

Allen is calling it a career one year after the program was almost cut. In May of 2013 the Intercollegiate Athletic Review Committee recommended that the men's and women's swimming and diving programs be shut down. In the end UNCW chancellor Gary Miller went against the recommendations and decided not to cut any programs.

The Seahawks program took off in 1977-78 with Allen at the helm. In 37 seasons at UNCW, Allen has coached the Seahawks to 13 straight men's CAA Championships from 2001-2014. He also led the women's program to three CAA Championship, for a total of 16 titles. The UNCW men's program is one of four teams in CAA history to have a championship streak of at least 10 year.

Overall Allen has been named the CAA Women's Coach-of-the-year five times and the Men's Coach-of-the-Year 10 times.
