WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – An armed robbery forced a Wilmington elementary school to lockdown as a precaution.

The New Hanover County Sheriff's Office is on the scene of an armed robbery at the Cape Harbor Apartments. The crime occurred around 3 p.m. just behind the campus of Eaton Elementary School which went on lockdown as a precaution.

A school faculty member said the lockdown has been lifted as of 3:15 p.m.  School lets out at 2:25 in the afternoon, but the faculty members said there were students on campus at the time of the lockdown.

A handful of students were attending after school programs and two groups, Girls on the Run and Stride, were on campus holding meetings.

We are working with the sheriff's office to get more information on the armed robbery.
