WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – A prescribed burn scheduled for Thursday at Halyburton Park has been canceled due to the forecasted weather conditions.
Officials have not rescheduled the burn yet.
According Wilmington spokesperson Malissa Talbert, 7-10 acres of the park are expected to burn.
Prescribed burns are planned fires that burn undergrowth in a controlled manner to minimize the risk of wildfires. It also makes it easier for native plant species to grow and improves the habitat in the park for wildlife.
Talbert said the burn will be conducted by the NC Forest Service and the Wilmington Fire Department.
