UNCW Press Release
WILMINGTON, North Carolina – UNCW red-shirt freshman Gavin Stupienski's pinch hit single in the 8th gave UNCW the lead as the Seahawks topped long-time rival VCU, 4-2, on Saturday at Brooks Field.
The Seahawks improved to 6-6 overall and 5-3 at home with the win while the Rams saw their seven-game winning streak halted and dropped to 10-2 on the season. It was their first road loss of the season.
Ryan LaGrange collected three hits on the game, drew a walk and scored twice while Corey Dick had two hits, including a two-run shot to left in the first inning that tied the game at two-all. It was his second of the season and the 19th of his career.
Neither starter figured in the decision as UNCW's Mat Batts and VCU's Heath Dwyer matched up in a pitcher's duel. Batts struck out seven and scattered eight hits over seven innings while allowing a pair of runs in the first inning. Dwyer was equally impressive, allowing two runs on seven hits and struck out two in his seven innings.
UNCW reliever Kelly Secrest (3-1) picked up the win, allowing just a double and a walk while fanning three in two innings.
VCU freshman Daniel Concepcion (2-1) took the loss after allowing two runs in the eighth on two hits and two walks.
James Bunn led VCU with three hits while Joey Cujas added two.
How it happened: LaGrange opened the eighth inning with walk and moved to second on a ground out. Luke Dunlap drew a walk to put runners on first and second for Stupienski. With two strikes, Stupienski lined a single to center to score LaGrange and Dillon Bass singled in pinch runner Steven Linkous one batter later to make it 4-2.
Inside the box score: Batts and Secrest held VCU to 1-for-10 at the plate with two outs … VCU was just 3-for-17 with runners on base … Batts allowed just one runner to score from third with less than two outs in four VCU opportunities … All three of LaGrange's hits were with two out as UNCW went 6-for-13 against Dwyer with two away.
Notes: Dick extended his hitting streak to eight games while Bass has now reached base safely in 10 straight … UNCW improved to 47-32 against VCU all-time and has a six-game winning streak against the former CAA rivals … Secrest now has a career record of 13-5.
Up next: The Seahawks and Rams will play a doubleheader on Sunday with first pitch slated for 1 p.m.
