WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – About a dozen homes were evacuated and law enforcement officials closed a portion of South College Road as crews worked to fix a gas leak in the city of Wilmington.
Chief Randy Burton with the Wilmington Fire Department says crews were able to secure the scene. Officials also tell us Piedmont Natural Gas was able to secure the leak.
All roads are back open. Police had closed off South College Road from Holly Tree Drive to the 17th Street extension as crews worked to fix the problem. Portions of Pine Valley Drive were closed as well, according to a press release from the Wilmington Fire Dept.
Twelve homes on Pine Valley Drive were evacuated for precaution. Those residents are back in their homes.
According to NHC dispatchers, a natural gas line was struck by a backhoe in the 3200 block of South College Road.
