(Toledo News Now) -

Forensic scientists have taken major steps towards catching criminals who may have gotten away with rape. The Bureau of Criminal Investigation announced it has tested more than 3,000 previously untested rape kits, which means closure for victims, as well as getting those responsible for the unsolved rape cases behind bars.

Some of the kits are 20-30 years old. People who committed a crime decades ago could still be on the streets.

In 2011, the Attorney General's Office announced a new push to solve these cases and said it would begin offering free DNA testing to any law enforcement agency where a crime was believed to have been committed.

In northwest Ohio, DNA testing was able to put Bradley Roberts behind bars. Sylvania Township police say test results helped convict him for a rape he committed back in 1993. The victim was just a young girl at the time and for years, she had to live with an unsolved case, knowing her attacker was still out there.

"To know that person is still out there and can still be doing this to other people, so for the detective to put this person in jail and have a successful trial, it really meant a lot to her. They tend not to do it just one time. They're repeat people for the most part," explained Deputy Chief Ray Carroll, "and those people won't stop, so it's important to put those people away."

In the state, DNA testing has led to nearly 1,000 hits. Agencies around northwest Ohio are taking advantage of the testing. More than 300 untested rape kits have been submitted by the Toledo Police Department.
