WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - The Feathers, Fur and Friends Pet Expo is happening at the Wilmington Moose Lodge Saturday and all the money raised will go toward building the Cape Fear Parrot Sanctuary.

The expo will be held at the Wilmington Moose Lodge 343 at 4610 Carolina Beach Road
Wilmington, NC 28412 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

It will feature an exotic parrot display, pet adoptions, face painting for kids, raffles, picture with a parrot, and music.

As it turns out, there are fewer than five parrot sanctuaries in the country. Ces Erdman, who lives in Wilmington, owns all the exotic birds that will be at Saturday's show.

Erdman has had a passion for parrots since he was three. He said he wants to build the Cape Fear Parrot Sanctuary non-profit on the outskirts of Wilmington.

He adds that not only will the sanctuary be a unique tourist attraction for the Cape Fear area,
but it'll be a spacious, permanent home for parrots.

"Believe it or not, there is a big issue when it comes to parrots not having a stable home," said Erdman. "It's similar to the cat overpopulation problem we sometimes hear about in area animal shelters."

A parrot  lives to be around 60 years old and normally, a parrot will have as many as 25 to 30 owners in that lifetime.

Erdman said the problem is that birds are easier to get and give up these days because of resources like Craigslist. Also, people often don't know what they are getting themselves in to when buying the bird.
