WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - Area students did some hands on learning by building a boat Thursday.

Students at the Island Montessori Charter School on Carolina Beach Road took turns helping to drill in screws, while others worked on sawing the wood.

Instructors said the hands on learning is very important in their curriculum, so they quickly agreed when one of the student's grandparents offered to help the kids build a boat.

The boat will be auctioned off during a fundraiser gala on Friday night.

Third grader Madeline Fischer said she is proud of their accomplishment.

"It makes me feel really good," said Fischer. "We may not know the person [that wins it] but we built the boat and it was our school that built the boat."
