WILMINGTON, NC (WECT/CNN) - Sweeping changes are on their way to the SAT college entrance exam, and one of the biggest changes is to the essay portion.
It will now become optional for students, depending on their college of choice. It will move the top score a person can get back down to 1600, as part of the biggest revamp since 2005.
Also included in these changes are no penalty for wrong answers, limited calculator use during the math section, and allowing students to take the test on a computer.
The change, however, to the writing section is the most surprising for some local tutors.
"A lot of students already struggle with the writings so it's not an easier way out," said Lynnette Askew with Huntington Helps. "But I do believe that when you do get to college you have to know how to write, so that's kind of a shock to me that they would take it out."
Officials say the months between January and June are prime time for students to take the SAT.
The test changes are expected to go in effect in Spring 2016.
