WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - The Finance Committee of the Cape Fear Public Utility Authority approved Wednesday a proposal for a rate increase for its customers.
The proposal calls for increasing the overall rates by $2.70 per month for the average customer.
The proposal would only affect the customer water usage and wastewater usage rates which are at $3.42 and $4.21 per thousand gallons, respectively.
The new proposal would increase the water usage rate by over 7% to $3.67 per thousand gallons. The wastewater usage rate would increase by over 8% to $4.56 per thousand gallons.
The proposal does not include an increase in the water and wastewater fixed charges which are 40 percent of the average customer's bill.
The committee says the new usage rates would address increasing daily expenses like fuel, energy, and chemicals and declining water consumption.
The proposal now moves to CFPUA's full board for consideration.
A public meeting will be held Wednesday, March 12 at 9 a.m. in the Lucie Harrell Conference Room in the New Hanover County Administration Building.
