(WMC-TV) – Drivers going in and out of Memphis along Highway 51 faced some tough challenges Tuesday morning on the ice and snow. A lot of thick ice covered portions of the highway near Millington.

Drivers like Fred Jensen described it as slippery. To combat the ice, Jensen placed chains on his tires for traction.

"If you don't have four-wheel drive you might as well forget about it," he said.

By the time morning rush hour rolled around, the line of vehicles driving 51 was slow. For the most part everyone was as careful as possible, however many commutes probably took twice as long.

But apparently there was nothing that could be done to help drivers along Veteran's Parkway in north Millington. There was so much snow and ice officials ended up closing the road and putting up barricades.

Jensen says they only reason he drove on the roads was to take his wife to the airport. His advice to other drivers is to stay home.
