A woman and her boyfriend were charged Tuesday in connection with the alleged abuse of a 3-year-old child.
Marketa A. Williams, 25, faces a felony count of abuse or neglect of a child, while Amber J. Zank-Balazs, 29, faces a felony count of first-degree endangering the welfare of a child and a misdemeanor count of second-degree endangering the welfare of a child.
A police report said officers were called to a home on East 42nd Street, just east of Pittman Road on Monday just before 5 p.m.
Zank-Balazs told police she noticed the bruises on the little boy's back, face and ear Monday afternoon when she took her child to use the restroom, but hadn't noticed them before. She took pictures of the bruises and texted them to a friend, who called police.
When the friend spoke to police, she said she had seen Williams hit the child with a back scratcher on several occasions.
The police report said the reporting party told them she thought the boyfriend "was responsible for the victim's injuries because of his violent tendencies towards the victim."
Williams had been staying at the home during that time.
Police said Zank-Balazs never called them and appeared upset that her friend notified police.
Authorities couldn't find a place for the little boy to spend the night, so he stayed at the hospital.
