WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – More than 3,300 people in North Carolina are awaiting a lifesaving transplant. Statistics show residents in Wilmington are willing to help others by signing up to be an organ donor.

According to Donate Life North Carolina, the Wilmington (North) Driver's License Office achieved the highest organ and eye donor designation rate of 67.3 percent for its district in 2013. The state average in 2013 was 51.9 percent.

This is the fourth year the Wilmington (North) office has been recognized by the non-profit for having the highest or most improved donor designation rates.

According to Donate Life NC, another name is added to the national transplant waiting list every 10 minutes, and an average of 18 people die each day waiting for a transplant.

One person can save up to eight lives through organ donations and restore sight in two people through cornea donation.

People can register to be an organ donor when receiving or renewing a driver's license or ID card. People can also register online at donatelifenc.org/register at any time.
