WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - Dr. Gabriel Rich III has traveled to Ukraine four times to provide dental assistance to five Ukrainian orphanages. There is a possibility he will be unable to go to on his upcoming trip this summer because of the Ukrainian conflict.
"The entire experience is so rewarding. You gain so much more than you give and it's so rewarding to see the reaction from the children," said Rich.
Dr. Rich has pulled 24 teeth, filled 75 cavities and treated 101 orphans. He is concerned for the Ukrainian orphans as the conflict continues.
"We've treated some of these orphans several times so you get attached to them," said Rich, "they'll be the ones who suffer because they are the last in the pecking order to get any funding."
According to Dr. Rich, several of his friends from Kiev, have reached out for emotional support. They have also asked about burn units to help treat injuries.
Dr. Rich said he hopes the conflict is resolved quickly so he can continue to work with the 26 orphanages in the Crimean region with the International Orphan Resource Center organization.
