WHITEVILLE, NC (WECT) – As the crisis in Ukraine escalates, Rep. Mike McIntyre (D) is calling on the U.S. to send a strong signal to Russia – but with economic measures, not military action.

McIntyre, a long serving member of the House Armed Services Committee, said it is clear Russia has "violated the territorial integrity of the Ukraine."

"Our concern right now is making sure that Ukraine is respected as an independent nation and that Russia does not set this kind of example that it can just go in and summarily take over a portion of another country," McIntyre said Monday at Southeastern Community College in Whiteville prior to his annual Youth Summit.

"Given the situation that we have right now in our Armed Services Committee, I do not see us making any kind of military commitment," he said. "I think it's going to have to be done through trade and economic sanctions and making sure that Russia understands that the other industrialized, developed nations of the world are not going to support Russia, they're not going to trade with Russia, they're not going to put up with these kinds of actions.  And we can send that kind of message through trade and economics."
