Conditions still sketchy on Miss. county roads

DESOTO COUNTY, MS -

(WMC-TV) - Around 10,000 people were without power in North Mississippi Monday afternoon as a result of the wintry weather. Meanwhile, road conditions are clear on the heavily traveled roadways, but the same cannot be said for county roads.

Ice still covers roads in many of the rural areas in North Mississippi. Any puddles of standing water could re-freeze. Road crews were out Monday afternoon working to clear the streets, in an effort of making driving a little more safe.

"I'm going to try to get back to Nashville, I guess, or stay at a hotel halfway home," said Judy Callies. "I'm terrified. I'm not used to driving in this kind of weather."

As drivers carefully navigate the roads, many people are waiting for power to be restored. For the latest on power outages, click here: http://www.etrviewoutage.com/external/ar.aspx.

According to the spokesperson, transmission lines are to blame for the outages in DeSoto County, specifically in the areas of Walls and Horn Lake.

In Tunica County, more than 40 utility lines were damaged from the ice Monday afternoon. Crews are working to fix the problems to both areas at Entergy's substation in Robinsonville.

Many of the Tunica casinos are running on generator power.

Several gas stations are closed and deputies are out monitoring intersections where traffic signals are not working.

Only a handful of North Central EPA customers in DeSoto and Marshall Counties were impacted, according to a spokesperson who added Mississippi crews would be heading to Covington to help restore power there.
