WRIGHTSVILLE BEACH, NC (WECT) – Residents and Wrightsville Beach visitors are voicing their opinions about a potential parking rate increase in 2014.

According to Mike Ryckman, who recently bought property on Wrightsville Beach, the increase in parking rates is driving him away from spending his time in on the island.

"Wrightsville Beach is an awful nice spot, but I'll drive to Topsail to save a day's worth of parking," said Ryckman.

Wilmington resident Jim Aceto agrees. He spends his time fishing in Wrightsville Beach, but now that the parking rates are in effect he'll have to switch beaches.

"Now, I'll go to Carolina or Kure Beach to fish, because who can afford it?" asks Aceto, "To raise the rates fifty cents, it's just crazy."

Town leaders will ask for input March 19 at a public hearing. If approved, the changes could start as early as this year.

Leaders are also considering extending the parking rate schedule from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.
