WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - After a brief warm up Sunday and Monday, old man winter will return in a big way by Monday night and stick around for much of the week.
SUNDAY: Expect sunny skies and a chilly start with readings near 40. The afternoon will be beautiful with sunny skies and highs approaching 70. Expect partly cloudy skies Sunday night with lows in the low 50's.
MONDAY: Prior to the arrival of an Arctic cold front we will see increasing clouds and highs approaching 70 again in Wilmington. There could be a few scattered showers in advance of the front. Temperatures will plummet Monday night behind the cold front as lows plunge into the low to mid 30's. Rainfall chances will be highest behind the front (60%).
Most of the precipitation will be rain, however north of Wilmington we can't rule out the possibility of some sleet or freezing rain mixing in late Monday night into early Tuesday morning. Little or no ice accumulation is expected but we will monitor the latest forecasts closely for any changes. Significant ice or snow accumulation maybe possible just to our north (it will be a close call in southeast North Carolina). Precipitation should wind down early Tuesday.
TUESDAY AND WEDNESDAY: Any leftover precipitation will quickly wind down Tuesday morning. Expect partly to mostly cloudy skies both day. It will be unseasonably cool with highs topping out in the upper 40's Tuesday to near 50 Wednesday. Lows will hover near freezing.
