NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – A state investigation into nude photos of North Carolina high school students appearing on Instagram has expanded to include six more counties, and officials expect the issue to get worse.
The New Hanover County Sheriff's Office said they are not handling any cases connected to photos of minors being posted on social media outlets such as twitter and Instagram.
Officials say they do encounter a number of these cases each year and are warning teens to be mindful about sending private photos.
"It's an issue that all teens need to understand," Sgt. Jerry Brewer said. "Know that if you are taking pictures that are inappropriate, that can be charged as a crime. It can quickly be stolen from you. It can quickly lose your control."
Technology has changed the way people share photos and videos today, and officials say it could make it harder to get rid of personal photos once they are distributed to other sites.
Brewer said teens need to remember that their private photos and videos could end up in the wrong hands if they aren't careful.
